The challenge
Exam prep for JAMB and WAEC candidates spans content delivery, adaptive study pacing, and institutional oversight — Acepal runs all three from one backend rather than bolting a mobile app onto a generic LMS.
The approach
The backend is a Spring Boot 3 / PostgreSQL service with Flyway-managed migrations, JWT auth, and Firebase for push notifications. A student-facing React Native (Expo) app handles practice sessions, mock exams, and study tracking; a separate React/Vite admin dashboard and an institution portal (bulk user management, credit allocation) round out the platform. Curriculum content is seeded per subject and exam board across eleven subjects, including Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English, Government, Mathematics, and Physics. An adaptive-learning layer — five backend services covering phase tracking, learning-style detection, group matching, and strategy selection — adjusts study sequencing per student, and a provider-routed AI layer (OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, and Gemini clients with rate limiting and cost tracking) generates flashcards, study notes, and question content. Payments run through Paystack and Flutterwave for credits and subscriptions.
